The following is part of a series of articles to help you Discover Your
Giftedness in Christ. The first portion is just a short introduction to the
longer article. The rest of this article can be read on the internet.
Understanding "who" we are helps explain "whose" we are! Some people
constantly examine who they are by comparing themselves to others. However,
God wants us to learn how to set the focus of our hearts on Him. We should
constantly examine ourselves in order to sharpen our focus on His will and
way for our lives. Through the study of His Word and prayer, we also can
learn why we feel, think, and act the way we do.

Many people want to avoid self-assessment and discovery, but I believe that
if we keep our eyes set on Christ and what He has to say about us in His
Word, then both of these will lead to obedience and a deeper walk with Him.
There is no way to avoid spiritual growth—especially when we are struggling
with a certain problem or weakness and we make an effort to seek God’s way
through the difficulty. He answers prayer and He knows the desires of our
hearts.
The path of every search must pass beyond ourselves toward knowing God
better. (Philippians 3:10) This study is to simply understand our
motivations, while maturing us into effective servants of Christ. Before we
begin, I want to say that I realize that a problem can arise with this type
of study, especially if we have never focused on spiritual gifts. Gaining an
overview of the different lists of spiritual gifts can help us learn how
Bible scholars identify the many different gifts.
Many Christians often ask, "Which spiritual gift list should I use?" I’ve
found that the shorter list in Romans 12 may be easier to teach, but not
inclusive. Others think we should focus on more gifts. I like the “Nine
Gifts List” from Romans 12 and Ephesians 4.
I realize that Saddleback, Willow Creek, and many other churches recognize
the"Twenty-three Gifts List." They probably want to be more open and allow
for the manifestation gifts in 1 Corinthians 12 in order not to offend
charismatic believers. Interestingly, the Alabama District of the Assemblies
of God asked me to create a profile using the 23 spiritual gifts combined
with the 4 DISC personality types. At the time, I had only published the 7,
9, and 16 combination profiles, but not one based on the 23 gifts. I
explained to them that the reason I had not published a profile with the 23
gifts was because it is very difficult to deal with the charismatic gifts of
tongues, interpretation of tongues, healing, and miracles from a practical
perspective. It is harder to place those gifts into specific ministries.
There are many Christians who believe or don’t believe that the charismatic
gifts of tongues, interpretation of tongues, healing, and miracles are in
operation in this day and age. Many would question where to place someone
with these specific gifts in the ministries of the church.
I don’t want to deal with the charismatic controversy. Instead, I want to be
more practical than theological because every church has its own biblical
convictions about spiritual gifts. I want to create simple assessments that
would bless any church desiring to have its members involved in the
ministries of their churches without getting argumentative. Therefore, I
approach the subject of spiritual gifts from the “KISS” perspective — "Keep It
Simple, Saints!"
The main purpose of these articles is not to settle any theological debates,
but to help believers get involved in their churches for God’s glory and
their personal blessing. The next article contains four of the most popular
spiritual gifts lists. We strongly recommend that you go to your minister or
church leaders and ask which gifts list they recommend.
